VISAKHAPATNAM : The magnificent green arowana seemed to enjoy the adoration of an appreciative audience. Its adjacent neighbour, the slender blackish beige catfish appeared to be in a peaceful meditative pose even amidst the commotion amongst curious onlookers. These are the new arrivals among several such enticing marine beauties gliding through the waters of the aquarium at Matsya Darshini.

Enhancing the contours of the water through their playful moves, the fish cascade in a world of their own behind the glass that is fascinating and packed with surprises. This charm and salubrious elegance exuberated by the maintenance of ornamental fish has meandered into the hearts of many who are keen on pursuing it as a hobby.

Among the new arrivals, there are the willowy river and peacock eels, a shoal of aggressive piranhas and silver sharks, the colourful but capricious flower horn, puffer fish and trigger fish. Timid, belligerent, hyperactive or docile – the colourful new members are a delight to watch. The fishes arrived here two weeks back after being quarantined in Chennai.

Some of these aquatic beauties have survived through all the summers in the aquarium ever since it was started in the year 2002 by the two friends who had retired from service, Cdr. R.K. Iyer and Captain S.R. Kumar.

The seven-year old grand silver arowana is one of the oldest and most expensive fish in the aquarium, now costing above Rs.1 lakh.

Interestingly, there are some species like the flower horn and trigger fish that cannot adjust with even their own species members and are solitary by nature. Flower horns are a type of ornamental aquarium fish noted for their vivid colours and the distinctively shaped heads for which they are named. According to Cdr. Iyer and Captain Kumar, maintaining aquarium is a 24-hour process. “These finned creatures are like new-born babies who do not know how to express themselves. You have to keep a close watch on their behavioural patterns to make them survive,” they say.
